OTTP-NorCal offers a premier internship program for occupational therapy students interested in community-based mental health for youth. We provide comprehensive training, clinical supervision, and a team environment that will shape your practice for years to come.

Comprehensive training in community-based youth mental health

We are grateful for the opportunity to provide clinical supervision for talented, motivated students who have a passionate interest in serving this population. Our internship is designed to challenge you, support you, and prepare you to be a confident, well-rounded clinician.

Transdisciplinary team

Work alongside occupational therapists, psychotherapists, social workers, and psychiatric nurse practitioners, broadening your clinical perspective.

Community-based settings

Gain real-world experience working across schools, community sites, and juvenile justice settings in San Francisco and Oakland.

Clinical supervision

Receive supervision from licensed, registered occupational therapists with deep expertise in youth mental health.

Real experience from day one

Assignments throughout your affiliation are designed to build clinical depth, professional skills, and real-world confidence.

Treatment plan development

Life skills, crafts, communication skills, social skills, and pre-vocational skills training.

Individual & group intervention

Direct service with children, youth, and young adults across a variety of settings and programs.

Clinical documentation

OT evaluations, individual and weekly progress notes, and reports to probation officers, teachers, and counselors.

Case management

Support with coordinating services and resources for the youth and families in our programs.

On & off-site meetings

IEP meetings, community-based agency meetings, and internal agency meetings.

Community resource development

Identifying and obtaining additional resources in the San Francisco and Oakland communities for OTTP youth.

Submit your application

Your school will provide you with application materials. Email your current educational resume and completed PDF application to fieldwork@ottp-sf.org.

Interview via Zoom

Our Intern Coordinators will schedule a brief Zoom interview, which will be recorded with your consent and reviewed by OTTP occupational therapy clinicians.

Hear back within one month

You will be notified via email within approximately one month of the submission deadline.

Confirm your dates

Once selected, our Intern Coordinators will confirm your start and end dates directly with your school's Fieldwork Coordinator.

Application windows

Spring placements

August 1 — October 1

Applications open in August for spring semester placements starting in January.

Summer & Fall placements

December 1 — February 1

Applications open in December for summer and fall semester placements.

Typical semester dates

Spring Approximately January — March
Summer Approximately June — August
Fall Approximately September — November

Before you apply

Stipend

Based on available funds, OTTP-NorCal may offer interns a stipend upon successful completion of their internship.

Travel & mileage

OTTP-NorCal is a community-based setting. Interns work across multiple sites daily throughout San Francisco and/or Oakland. Mileage is reimbursed.

Who should apply
